INHERITANCE PROJECT invites you to…

Bridge Builders

Conflict Resolution & Inclusive Leadership
Training Program

Mar 28 - May 16, 2024

This 7-week program WILL empower you to break cycles of division, turn conflict into connectION, and be the type of leader you want to see in the world right now.

Your time is now…

The events erupting on the world stage are a reflection of what is harbored inside of us. The narratives that follow have shown how ill-equipped we are to have constructive dialogue across lines of difference. This inability is causing violence to our relationships, our organizations, our communities, and our world.

Conflict is an inevitable part of the human experience because each one of us has different needs, drives, wishes, and demands. This is true from the boardroom to the bedroom to the borders. Yet despite the ubiquity of conflict, most of us lack the skills to engage in conflict constructively.

Most of us have inherited a belief system that life is a zero-sum game of “my needs versus your needs”: where for one person to win, another has to lose.

You are here because you see that we need a collective evolution in our perspective on and approach to conflict; an evolution that requires us to examine deeply what we have inherited and begin to transform it into something new.

It is time for us to learn how to build bridges, instead of fueling division. It is time to transform “either or” into “both and”.

It is time for us to navigate turbulent transitions gracefully, create more resilient relationships, and engage in the challenging conversations necessary for real change.

I have learned so much about myself and have experienced real and meaningful transformation in both my professional and personal lives as a result of the tools and insights from this course. We so often think that the work of inclusion requires changing others - in this course I discovered that the most effective way to create inclusion is to start by changing yourself.
This course has been life altering!

I LOVED the program! So often I attend workshops that ask individuals to be vulnerable without providing any scaffolding that allows people to feel brave enough to do so. The pacing and content of this program was engaging, comfortable, and challenging!

A NEW DEFINITION

Inheritance (noun):

ancestry, culture, beliefs, values, stories, social conditions, traits, and perspectives received from past generations

Your inheritance is more than the physical items passed from one generation to the next. It is the accumulation of your individual lived experiences and unique personal context. your inheritance shapes how you live, think, and communicate with others.

This essential context is often unacknowledged in workplaces and relationships, leading to unnecessary misunderstanding and division.

This program is for you if…

✔️ You want to be a bridge builder: someone who is able to masterfully handle any conflicts and find creative solutions to interpersonal issues arising in any relationship or group

✔️ You want to be an evolutionary: a trail-blazing, innovative leader who leaves a positive legacy at your organization and in the world

✔️ You are experiencing tension or conflict between family members, teams, departments, or individuals in your care and are looking for practical, actionable tools to transform these dynamics into healthy collaboration

✔️ You're ready to break the cycle of your inherited reactions to conflict and tension

✔️ You are a leader, entrepreneur, or manager desiring to improve your communication skills and ability to create an inclusive, collaborative environment for your team

✔️ You want to improve working relationships with your family, your stakeholders, team members, or board

✔️ You are curious to investigate how your inheritance, identity, culture, and early life experiences affect your life, leadership, and relationships in and outside work

✔️ You are committed to your own evolution and growing your leadership skills, because you know that professional development = personal development

✔️YOU ARE READY TO BREAK THE CYCLE, build bridges and be the change

Using these tools is removing a lot of internal stress from my daily work life. The Inheritance Project Leadership Immersion is life changing. It is a how-to guide for being not only an inclusive leader, but an inclusive human being. I would highly recommend this program for anyone who wants to communicate more effectively, recognize and resolve conflict before it can get out of control, and to deepen both work and personal relationships.

Curriculum

IMG_9100.jpg

An immersive, connective learning experience beyond anything you’ve experienced before…

Our curriculum is designed to provide an experiential learning environment, in which you’ll receive REAL, PRACTICAL tools and action steps to assist you in common workplace and relational conundrums like:

  • Setting boundaries with clients or leaders

  • Telling someone ‘no’ in a way that strengthens the relationship rather than stifles it

  • Giving feedback to a team member

  • Addressing microaggressions

  • Staying calm in high-stress situations & uncomfortable conversations, like salary negotiation, conflict with a spouse or Thanksgiving dinner with a relative whose political views you find offensive

All sessions are highly interactive and will involve somatic practices, individual reflection, and small group dialogue.

To get the most out of this program, we highly recommend joining all sessions live rather than only viewing the recordings.

Experience it for yourself…

Your Journey

  • Begin by unpacking what makes you, you. Explore how your inheritance and intersectional identity influence the way you lead and communicate, using sociologist Kwame Appiah’s 5Cs of Identity framework (Country, Culture, Creed, Class, Color).

  • Unearth what lies beneath your surface-level understanding of conflict. Become aware of the deeper dynamics underlying conflict and how they affect your nervous system. Develop an awareness of how your inheritance impacts the way you communicate and lead through conflict and in high-stakes situations.

  • Discover the foundational techniques for effectively resolving conflict. You will learn the 7 Skills for Challenging Conversations and apply them to a real-life situation you are facing at work e.g setting boundaries with clients, giving feedback to a team member, or addressing a micro-aggression.

  • Understand the true definition of inclusion and learn to apply the 7 Skills to create more inclusive, effective collaborative environments. Create your personal Leadership Manifesto to become accountable for integrating the 7 Skills into the way you lead and work.

  • In between each 2-hr Live Workshop, there is an Integration & Coaching Session. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and receive guidance and “hot seat coaching” on real-life situations you are facing.

  • In addition to attending group sessions, this training will require approximately 45 minutes per week of individual work. This includes but is not limited to: course readings, written reflections, engaging in dialogue with your pod and other participants, and 5-10 minute somatic practices such as breathwork and guided meditation.

I was honestly a bit skeptical about it. But I can’t begin to say how much it helped me uncover my deepest thoughts and connect the dots... What a powerful experience it was!

What makes this special?

How is this different from other leadership programs and online courses?

This program was not created by corporate trainers, and will be a breath of fresh air if you’re used to traditional “leadership training”. Our co-founders and facilitators are a multicultural team of experience designers who bring together various skills, expertise, and perspectives to create a process unlike any you’ve experienced before.

Our team draws upon the fields of education, mindfulness and meditation, theater and movement, creative problem-solving, healing arts, game design, non-violent communication, and more.

Our methodology builds inclusive leaders with strong communication and conflict resolution skills through Experiential & Embodied Learning as well as Somatic & Nervous System Integration with a Focus on Inclusion & Belonging. Read more by pressing the “+” signs below.

  • The term 'somatic' means relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind.

If we consciously or subconsciously perceive a situation, person, or conflict as a threat, our nervous system will activate a sympathetic response. This sympathetic response or “survival mode” evolved to help us survive and keep us safe by quickly identifying and reacting to threats in our environment. While this can be very useful to keep us safe from harm, the reactions of our nervous system can also sometimes get in the way of us fully understanding and empathizing with others.

When we approach our greatest challenges, such as disagreements with a boss or colleague, with intention and learn how to regulate our nervous systems, we give ourselves the opportunity to turn challenging conversations into meaningful connections.

Each week you will receive a different ~5 min somatic practice, to practice every day that week. These practices will help you strengthen and align your body, mind, and energy for leadership (and life). These guided video practices may involve breathing exercises, physical warm-ups, and other meditative practices.

  • DEIB stands for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. Many leadership programs are taught from the perspective of dominant workplace norms in the US, and fail to give leaders the skills to collaborate with the incredible variety of humans present in our diverse workplaces.

At the same time, many DEIB programs are missing the mark. For example, one of the most popular DEIB training solutions is implicit bias training. However, a growing body of research shows that this is ineffective in actually reducing bias and can actually serve to increase bias and create more division in the workplace.

We invite you to pause and reflect…

Do you ever feel like you're being judged or stereotyped by your coworkers or managers?

Do you feel unsafe to be yourself at work?

Are conversations about identity, equity, and privilege 'taboo' or off-the-table in your company culture?

Have you been through boring, ineffective, or infuriating DEIB trainings in the past that didn't change anything and caused more harm than good?

We understand that many leaders in organizations have great intentions that often leave a harmful impact.

At Inheritance Project, we don't tell you what to think or how to behave, or teach generalizations about whole groups or cultures. Instead, we create a space where each individual can reflect for themselves, and be seen and heard in their nuanced, complex, intersectional identity.

We are currently experiencing a growing backlash against DEIB efforts. If you are a leader who wants to sustain a long-term shift towards equity and justice in your life and work, you need the skills to build bridges and engage those with different perspectives in a constructive way.

Our program is designed to give you the skills you need to turn naysayers into the most enthusiastic collaborators.

  • Many coaches and training programs teach “inclusion” or “leadership” through an academic lens.

Rather than giving you an experience of inclusion, they teach you about inclusion, in theory.

    Theory ≠ practice.

Learning about something is not the same thing as experiencing it for yourself.

This program is designed to teach through experience. We don’t just teach “about” our inclusive leadership tools; we use them during the workshops to give everyone the experience of these tools in action.

Our co-founders are a multicultural team of experience designers who bring together various skills, expertise, and perspectives to create a process unlike any you’ve experienced before.

Our team draws upon the fields of education, mindfulness and meditation, theater and movement, executive strategy, creative problem solving, healing arts, game design, non-violent communication, and more.

This program was not created by corporate trainers, and will be a breath of fresh air if you’re used to traditional “leadership training”.

At the coalition I run, we are a bunch of extremely diverse activist leaders.

The Inheritance Project team is very effective in making all types of audiences feel at ease with opening up to a deep conversation, literally within minutes.

The facilitators excel in creating that sense of safety, vulnerability, and openness.

We loved the repetition of more mindful practices, and the realization that everything we learned can be used at work and in your personal life. We had stories every week of someone using one of the 7 Skills with a partner at home, or in a tricky situation at work.

People new to our team are learning to lead inclusive meetings. They’re gaining confidence realizing that THEY can be the role models for inclusive practices, no matter who’s in the room with them - senior leadership or a peer. Everyone needs to practice these skills, all day, every day. The leadership training we received is the beginning, and we are building a whole program around integrating them into norms for our team and division.

    1. Listen with your full body - give your full attention to the person speaking and actively respond with body language

    2. Honor confidentiality - do not share names or personal stories that are shared in the session with others

    3. Turn assumptions into questions - be aware of the assumptions and stories you may be making about yourself and others; let them go and be curious instead

    4. Use "I" statements - speak from your own specific experience, rather than in broad generalizations

    5. Take responsibility for your own experience - own the ways you contribute to your situation and advocate for your needs
